March 9, 2010

Having a baby is the most exciting part in having a family. After nine months of expecting your baby, you can finally cuddle the sweet, little angel in your arms. All the preparations have been made and parents are always eager to give their baby all the nice surprises the world offers. Baby equipment is necessary to ensure your child’s protection and comfort. Variety of baby equipment is available in the market, but there are four essential baby equipments for you baby that you should never miss out.

After giving birth, you can’t wait to let your whole family see the new baby you have nurtured for nine long months. You are finally going home.

Most hospitals conduct safety checks on your vehicle before allowing your baby to be discharged from the hospital. Baby car seats are very important to ensure that the baby is safe and secured during your journey home. Baby car seats should be properly installed within your car to protect your child all the time. Travel will also be more convenient for you and your baby if you have a baby car seat present inside your car.

The nursery is your baby’s haven. Baby furniture selected with care will provide that nice cosy feeling when your baby gets home. Your child will surely enjoy settling in her crib and sleeping soundly during the first night at home. You should ensure that your baby furniture is free from hazardous materials like small parts that can be easily swallowed and choked on. Soft cushions could also be positioned around your baby’s crib if you are using the conventional wooden crib. This will protect your baby from bumps particularly during their crawling stage.

At six months, your baby is learning to sit up and crawl around. She is now able to play on her own and explore the world around. This is the best time to buy baby bouncers. Baby bouncers allow her to play independently and let her enjoy discovering her ability to use her own two feet. This is also a good exercise for her muscles to strengthen her legs. It is the best preparation for your baby as she learns her way to walk and run.

After a few months, your baby eventually learns how to stand and walk around. Cruising around home will be easier for her if she is using a baby walker. Baby walkers act as guide to your child as she discovers her ability to walk. This could be very exciting for the whole family. Your baby’s first step is one of the most memorable experiences as a parent. Baby walkers will let them explore every corner of the room. Just make sure that your baby walker is properly secured to ensure that your baby is safe and accident-free.

Babies grow up with just a blink of an eye. After some time, you might wonder how they grew up so fast. But after a while, you realise that this is life and all you have to do is give them all the love and nurturing they need to become successful adults.

Things to Purchase Before Moving Overseas

March 9, 2010

Things to purchase before moving overseas.

When you think about it this advice goes against everything that is rational when moving overseas. When you’re moving internationally should be getting rid of stuff not buying more things! Well my mom wished that she had purchased more items. She realize this is very first week that she walked into her new condo and was faced bare store shelves, or a store employee that says we don’t carry that. She even tried a few of the other German stores, however the price was either really high, or they just didn’t have what she needed either. So now what was she supposed to do? We’ll talk to her the most was thinking about her pet cat, it was tracking litter and self all the way up and down the stairs she’s already on her second litter box. Only a high-quality cat litter box will do for this cat apparently and much to my mom’s dismay, every store that sells these types of clever litter boxes in Canada does not ship to Germany because it is so big. I thought about using various shipping companies, but this litter box is already oversized and it would not ship because it must still follow USPS guidelines. But this is only a sample of lots of things she wishes she would have purchased or had brought over.

OUR BEDFRAME. I’m not talking about the mattresses or the box spring. She got rid of the old rickety one before she moved and figured that she would be able to purchase a new one overseas after moving. One of the main reasons, is that the German beds are completely different sizes. An additional reason, selections at the local furniture stores is very limited and the movers are very pricey even for delivering beds.

Miscellaneous items and hardware. Yes, the basic stores have the nails in screws hammers and basic hardware. But try to find those special clips that are for Canadian beds or entertainment centers it’s nearly impossible and very frustrating.

Comforters blankets and sheets. If some of your old bedding is trashed, then you have to prepare to purchase these types of things on sale before you move. Again the basic stores in Germany are very overpriced with these types of things and they never seem to go on sale, plus they even add on shipping costs on top of the purchase price because none of them are made locally. I want even start to discuss the poor choice selection either.

All of those special products for your pet that you took for granted. Overseas, they are mostly unavailable or again very expensive because of the German economy. Does your pet take prescriptions rushing mark tried to get your prescription filled or by as much of it as you can before you leave. Most of the vet stores will charge you an arm and a leg. Just another thing that you have to think about bringing overseas input into your moving budget.

All of those favorite 110v appliances. This one’s fairly obvious to most people, the electrical system in Germany is completely different than Canadian electricity. And depending on the weight and the size of the item, it might be too cost prohibitive to transport or it might even be over to Canadian requirements for weight and or size.

Talking to some of our fellow neighbors who had movers transport their furniture and belongings overseas, I’d say 50% or more of them shipped over to Germany as if they were minimalists. Most of their stuff is in storage back in Canada. Most of them wish that their stuff was with them instead of being in storage. Actually when they add up the costs of the shipping versus all of the time that they spend purchasing new items causes them to regret thinking they could save money by leaving it in Canadian storage. Most of them were scared away by the movers quotes for shipping overseas and I suppose it is expensive when you look at it. But it’s like most things in life you don’t realize the costs until it’s too late. Looking back I would say to get rid of most of the furniture that was purchased at shopping sprees at places such as IKEA. But most of the things that you really took for granted such as sofas, couches, dressers, desks, bicycles, books, dining room sets, beds and bedding etc. makes you realize how much work you have ahead of you to purchase new items to replace the things that you’re paying to sit in storage. It seems like everything that is purchased is only the cheapest furniture to avoid wasting money because everything else is sitting in Canadian storage. The other problem is that you feel like you’re living as a poor person because the furniture is mostly substandard and overpriced.

Anyway those are the highlights of my mom’s experiences… and she had to do everything over again there is her list. I hope you can learn from her experiences and everyone else is if you can.

How to Eliminate Stress Whilst Moving With Children

March 8, 2010

The experience of moving in itself is already a stressful ordeal. But add to that moving with children, then you have a living nightmare right in front of you. Children when they are already attached and familiar to their surroundings find it difficult to let go. They have their normal playgrounds and pals who they already keep a close bond with. So for parents, moving with children normally is a more stressful and nerve-racking episode. So if you are a parent and are moving with children to a new place, maybe these pointers may help eliminate stress on your part.

Have a talk with the children about the move

To eliminate stress for you as a parent about moving, you should talk to your children about the move. When it comes to moving to another place with children, do not surprise them out of the blue. As much as possible, tell your children all the basic details about the move. Let them know several weeks before the move that the entire family is moving to another place. By having that talk with kids, you already get to eliminate stress.

Packing process and how to deal with children

An important part of the moving process is the packing of the household materials that you will bring with you to the new house or apartment. If you have not prepared your children for the moving and you are in the packing phase, then expect a lot of trouble. Once you get to start packing, inform your kids beforehand what their responsibilities are. To lessen their anxiety about the move and eliminate stress on your part, have them set aside the things that can be carried in a bag like their toys and security blanket. In this way, the children can still have access to these things they are really attached to when you are on your way to the new house or apartment. This gives them a sense of security during the moving process.

Prepare them mentally about leaving the old house and apartment

For children, it is a sad experience to leave a house, particularly one where they grew up in. You need to prepare them mentally about the move by talking to them about how great the new house will be and how they will get to meet new friends in the new place you are heading to. It is also advantageous to take pictures of the old house along with the kids so they can have memories of their old residence. Remember, unless they are mentally prepared, children tend to whine and nag all throughout the moving process. So preparing them mentally in a way also eliminates stress on your part.

Celebrate Your Arrival in Your New House or Apartment

Once you have arrived in your new house or apartment, celebrate with your children. The celebration itself eliminates stress. You can celebrate simply by buying a cake from the local bakery or by ordering pizza.

Moving with children is never as easy as moving to a new house on your own. Hopefully these guidelines can help you eliminate stress when you move to a new home.

Everybody knows that moving with children to a new home may be a stressful ordeal. You may want to read these guidelines on how to eliminate stressduring the moving process with children.

How Safe Is Your Laundry Room?

March 7, 2010

Most homeowners are unaware of the threat that an ill-maintained laundry room poses to their family’s health and safety. Despite using their laundry room multiple times a week, many homeowners never perform crucial maintenance tasks.

One of the biggest risks of a neglected laundry room is the possibility of a fire. Over time your dryer vent can get clogged full of clothing lint and dust. If the vent gets too clogged, the heat from your dryer can ignite the debris. This can cause a devastating and potentially deadly house fire. To prevent this type of fire from occurring, you should disconnect and thoroughly clean your dryer vent at least once every year. Alternatively, you could have a dryer vent cleaning service perform this maintenance for you. Whether you do it yourself or hire a service, it needs to be done in order to ensure your family’s safety.

Maintaining your dryer vent is also a good way to cut energy expenses. A dryer with a clogged vent does not dry as efficiently. A dryer with a dirty, clogged vent uses up to two or three times the amount of energy that a properly maintained dryer would use. Dryer vent cleaning will save you money on drying and keep your home safe.

Additionally, a clogged dryer vent can cause carbon monoxide to be released into your family’s home. Many homeowners do not know that carbon monoxide is vented through your dryer’s vent. The fumes that a gas dryer emits are dangerous. If these fumes are not able to escape through the vent because it is clogged, that carbon monoxide will enter your house. Carbon monoxide poisoning is deadly. To make sure that your family is safe from this threat, you should have carbon monoxide detectors installed and you should also have your dryer’s vent checked regularly. If your dryer is powered by gas, you should also have a professional periodically check your gas line to make sure that it is in good condition and that there are no worn or broken areas through which gas can escape.

Finally, homeowners should educate themselves about the type of water lines their washing machine has attached. Rubber lines can break and cause flooding. Manufactures recommend that you replace your rubber water lines once every five years. If you are in the market for a new washing machine, make sure that the unit you select has steel braided water lines instead of rubber water lines. Many of the steele braided lines come with a life time guarantee. It’s very important that you thread the water line properly or you will have problems.

A poorly maintained washer can cause a flood, and a poorly maintained dryer cause cause a fire. Both disasters can cause costly damage to your property. Additionally, a fire could put you and your loved ones in serious danger. Make sure that your family’s laundry room is safe by having regular maintenance completed. Also make sure you have a smoke detector near your laundry room. Over 15,000 dryer fires occur every year. Don’t become a statistic.

Teaching Children to Steer Clear of Kidnappers

March 5, 2010

Not long ago a mother was shocked to be reunited with her daughter. Twenty years before, the child had been kidnapped. Her case is not the only one of its kind as children are abducted and held against their will worldwide. We all want to believe that we live in a place where these things couldn’t possibly happen. Yet, we best protect our families by taking steps to prepare for the worst and develop guidelines to help keep us safe.

A SEDUCTIVE FALSEHOOD

A dangerous lie is a lie you want to be true. People believe these lies because the truth is something they don’t want to accept. “Do what I say, and you won’t get hurt,” is a lie as old as the father of lies. The desire to believe you won’t get hurt is so great that many people will obey. This is very similar to adults that refuse to allow themselves to consider that their children might need to know what to do if they are grabbed. The thought that a child could be taken is a parent’s worst nightmare.

BUT I DON’T WANT TO LIVE IN FEAR

One way parents and children can better secure themselves is by accepting that we live in a world where predators look for easy prey. Arm your children with the information they need to avoid being targeted and how to react if approached. Instead of being afraid, a child can gain confidence that he knows how to avoid dangerous circumstances and can immediately respond to an emergency.

UTILIZE TEACHABLE MOMENTS

Take the time to speak with your child about the definition of a stranger. Seize opportunities at home and while running errands to remind your child what he has learned.

• Show your child how to find a stranger that he can trust in an emergency.

• Play a game with your child to help him remember who is a stranger. Don’t forget that strangers aren’t always scary, funny looking or old. Sometimes bigger children will victimize smaller children.

• Libraries, police stations, restaurants, stores, homes of trusted family members or friends, community centers and other locations should be discussed and shown to the child as safe places he can go for help.

• Take your child people-watching and discuss the difference between someone who is polite and someone that is overly friendly. Help them identify when someone is ‘too’ nice or eerily perfect.

THINGS YOUR CHILD NEEDS TO KNOW

• Someone your child doesn’t know is a stranger.

• They should never go with someone they do not know (not even walking in the same direction), even if they seem nice.

• Strangers may attempt to lure a child into a house, building or car using toys or treats. An abductor may even know the child’s name, but a child should be trained to never go willingly even if offered these enticements. Instead, the child should loudly shout, “NO!” and run for help.

• If you are endangered, it’s okay to strike out and hurt an adult. A child should be made to understand that it’s not a bad or rude thing to run away and get help.

• A child should never help adults who claim to be in trouble and in need of assistance. Yell, “NO!” Get away and go for help. If an adult needs help, he or she can ask another adult to assist. Something is definitely not right when an adult seeks out a child for aid.

The following scenarios are to be avoided:

• Adults with a leash looking for a lost dog.

• Someone needing directions.

• Drivers asking for help with mechanical difficulties.

• Someone asking for help to find something in a car or house.

Implement these as soon as possible:

• Consider using a secret word so that a child knows you sent a trusted adult. If the person knows the child, but not the secret password, the child shouldn’t cooperate. Change the word often.

• Make it your custom to tell your child who and when another adult will be driving them.

• Make it a rule that your child will not accept a gift from someone they don’t know – especially when his parents aren’t present. Anything offered when parents are not there should be refused. A predator can use gifts as bait. A child can be drugged by doped candy or harmed by other items hidden in gifts.

• Children should trust their sense of danger. If a situation makes a child feel threatened tell him to run. They should run for help if they feel scared. By RUNNING to the nearest safe place, a child can then locate an adult and ASK FOR HELP.

• It is more important to be safe than it is to be polite. It’s better safe than sorry.

• When dealing with a stranger that is threatening, remember the three R’s: Recognize, Respond and Report.

ROLE PLAY; MAKE IT A GAME

• Take on the role of a stranger and pretend to ask for directions or try to get your child to help you find a lost pet.

• Show the children how to keep a safe distance – beyond arm’s reach.

• Show your child how to run away if the stranger gets too close or grabs another child. Talk about why they should run for help if another child is grabbed and not stay there.

• Help your child practice how to yell and scream effectively to attract the most attention.

• Help your child learn how to break an abductor’s grip by kicking and twisting.

• Show your child how to claw an abductors face (eyes, ears, mouths & nose) with their fingers to get away.

BECOMING AN UNAPPEALING TARGET

• Train your children to remain in a group and look out for others.

• Train children to never go with those who invite them to leave the group.

• Always walk or play with a safe buddy or in a group.

• Require children to check with you first before leaving your home or some other location.

• Talk with other parents in your community about these guidelines for child safety.

By incorporating these guidelines as part of your normal routine, your child should not become afraid. Just as you would wear safety-belts in a car, look both ways at an intersection and wash hands before meals, these suggestions can be taught as part of ongoing well-being.

How Can You Have a Good Time With Kids in Restaurants?

March 4, 2010

They say that enjoyment without responsibility is a godsend boon. And sure, whenever you prepare a big soiree or lunch party in your home, you are always left to the dirty dishes in the sink at the end of it. Well, no more. It is a better option to go enjoy your dinners, lunches or breakfasts in a restaurant, and be it with your friends or family, you will always end up having a very good time.

When you have kids, it helps to break the monotony of daily life by going out together for a unique dining experience. Not only will you feel different, but your family will to get a break from their work. Your kids will have more fun, since they really love to go out and play.

But having kids in a restaurant can be an embarrassing experience sometimes. They are restless, careless and too preoccupied blasting aliens away so as to stay still and not cause mayhem. The restaurant is a very busy place. There are people rushing around with expensive crockery, food and drinks. There is a lot of danger involved in letting your kid go wild. So how can you have a good time while keeping your kids out of trouble? Well, here are a few tips to follow:

•There is no need to catch your kid in a bad mood, haul him to a restaurant to change his mind about something, and get disapproving looks from other guests. The point is, if your kid decides to sulk, there is little you can do to change it. Do not get him to any public place. He may shriek and cry.

•It is always a great idea to keep your kid busy. If you have a girl, bring some Barbies with you so that she could play with them in the restaurant. Some “family-friendly” restaurants offer toys, but you never know whether they have been properly cleaned. It is better to take your own toys with you.

•Remember that restaurants are not playgrounds. There is never enough space to move around in. so do not let your child play with remote controlled cars or balls. They would spell disaster. You can let your child use crayons, pencils to draw on paper, or let him get along just fine with his action figures.

•Better still- prepare a surprise for your child! This will keep him grooved and excited. The moment you get seated, let him open the bag to discover his toys there. This is a positive reinforcement that will keep your kid in his best behavior. But if he does not listen to you, you can withhold his gifts from him. He will soon learn to behave.

•If you want quick serves, it is better to opt for McDonalds. They also have cool toys with the meal packs.
