6 Ways to Improve Your SAT Writing Score

November 30, 2009

Taking the SAT test can be a rather distressing experience for any student, but with the right help and guidance, every pupil has the potential to do well for their SAT test. So if the SAT Writing section is your weakness, then read on. Adopting the following tips may drastically improve your overall SAT scores.

1) Be prepared

This may sound like an obvious tip but it’s critical that you come prepared to the test. One way to be prepared is to memorise about six to eight quotes or historical events that you can use in your essay. You don’t have to use all of them, but try to include at least 2 of them in your essay. The topic is usually open-ended. Including historical events or quotes are bound to impress the graders.

2) Take a stand in your essay

Decide whether you agree or disagree with the statement of the essay before you start writing about it. Don’t be wishy-washy or feel afraid to explore just one side of the argument.

3) Manage your time wisely

This is one of the most important factors in determining that you will be able to finish the test on time. This is why SAT preparation is extremely important so you will be able to gauge how much time you need for each section. It is advised that you only give yourself about 5 minutes to outline your essay before spending another 10 minutes to write it out. Ideally, your essay should consist of one paragraph of introduction, 2 to 3 paragraphs each detailing examples to support your stand followed by one paragraph of conclusion. Then it’s advisable that you spend the rest of the time proofreading it to ensure that the essay makes sense.

4) If you are stuck, just make something up

The people who are checking your essays usually only take about two minutes to mark each paper. They simply do not have time to check your facts. So even though you are not sure about your history, make something up. Not only are you likely to get away with it, it’s still much more impressive to include ‘facts’ in your essay than not at all.

5) Write legibly

Don’t scribble on your essay. Help the graders read your essay by writing neatly and legibly. Not only will this please the graders, there will also be fewer risks of them mistaking your words for something else.

6) Don’t randomly guess for the multiple-choice questions

Take note that while you will earn 1 point for each correct answer, each wrong answer will cost you ? of a point. So don’t randomly guess the answers. If you don’t know the answer to a multiple-choice question, make an educated guess by eliminating the obvious incorrect choices.

Of course, besides adopting these tips, you should also build up your vocabulary and be familiar with the format for the SAT Writing section. Consider enrolling into an SAT course if you require more discipline in preparing for your SAT. If you don’t, then these tips provided will suffice.

6 Tips to Build Your Vocabulary For TOEFL

November 30, 2009

Building up the vocabulary of a foreign language is undeniably hard for anyone, especially if you don’t use the language often in day-to-day life. So it’s highly understandable if you are feeling anxious about your upcoming TOEFL test. But don’t worry, here are 5 tips to help you effectively build up your vocabulary for TOEFL.

1) Read plenty of reading materials that interest you

You don’t have to force yourself to read only educational books that bore you. Read plenty of books that interest you. Try to vary the styles of books to read and don’t bother to read books that bore you. Then pick out the words that you don’t know the meaning to and look them up in the dictionary.

2) Design the most effective way for you to build vocabulary

Everyone has different learning styles. There are quite a few effective ways to build vocabulary. The first method is to use vocabulary trees that help to provide context. Map out a few vocabulary trees and you’ll automatically start thinking in vocabulary groups. When you see a cup, your mind will quickly relate to words such as knife, fork, late, dishes, etc.

An alternative method is to create vocabulary themes. This method includes listing down vocabulary themes by arranging them according to the vocabulary itself, definition and a sample sentence. Try out both methods and find out which way helps you to build your vocabulary quicker and easier.

3) Try to put the newly learned words into practice

Even if you are rarely in an English-speaking environment, try to put the newly learned words into practice. Include these words into conversations or e-mails. If you cannot find any opportunities to use those words, speak to yourself using these words. The most important thing you have to do is to activate your knowledge.

4) Use technology

Watching English movies is a fun and effective way to understand English speakers. You can also make use of software programmes and TOEFL preparation DVDs designed to build power vocabulary. Using technology will save time in comparison to the old-fashioned ways of learning words.

5) Create specific goals

It helps to create specific goals to build your vocabulary. For example, choose a different topic each week and find out all the necessary vocabulary associated with the topic. Give yourself a small reward at the end of the week to motivate yourself to continue building up your vocabulary until your test day.

6) Picture your words

When you try to memorise the words that you’ve just learned, use your imagination. Picture the word in your mind. This is the easiest and most effective way for you to remember new words.

Since bolstering your English vocabulary is a very important factor to ace the TOEFL test, full preparation for the test will take a good few months. But follow the given tips and you should be able to handle the test. If you require further discipline to work on your vocabulary however, don’t sweat it. Consider taking up a TOEFL course to help you prepare for the test.

Can I Find a Person by Using Name Only? Finding People You Know is Fun

November 30, 2009

What could be more fun than finding people you know?

Have you ever spent time looking into someone’s past or digging up gossip on them? Was it fun? I bet it was. What if you could have the same fun finding information on people that you haven’t seen for some time? Perhaps you are looking for an old boyfriend or girlfriend. It would be good to locate them again or just find out what they have been up to and if they got married or not.

You can find someone by using their name only and it can be a lot of fun doing it. Here is how you can do it.

What’s the secret of locating people?

Some say that “knowledge is power”, others say that “information is power”. They are both right. If you want to find someone amongst the millions of people out there then you need information and lots of it. But information by itself isn’t enough. You also need the knowledge to be able to use that information wisely.

If you have the information and the knowledge and means to organize and search that information then you can use it for all kinds of interesting tasks such as finding people.

Public records are free but how do you find what you are looking for?

Finding people when all you have is a name is like detective work. You have to start with what you know and keep searching until you find enough clues to put the puzzle together. There is a very good chance that the clues that you need are buried in some public records somewhere if only you knew how to find it.

Public records are generally free for you to access but unfortunately there is no official central store of public records. They are kept in thousands of separate databases all over the place. Some of them are on the Internet and some of them are not. Unless you have a good idea of what you are looking for and where to go for it you can spend a lot of time getting nowhere.

What if there was a place that you could go where they collect all the public records that they can get their hands on and make them available to you from one easy to use web site? It would make things so much easier wouldn’t it.

It should come as no surprise to find that there are web sites that have been collecting public records for years. Why is it not surprising? Well there is a huge demand for such a service. After all, it’s a service that you can use to find someone you are looking for and there are a lot of people doing exactly the same thing. Where there is a demand for something it will eventually be provided.

Find a person by name only doing unlimited background checks

There are a number of good public records web sites out there and I have used some of them to find people myself. I can tell you that if you are looking for someone starting with limited information like only their name, then you may need to do a lot of searches before you find enough pieces of the puzzle to find them with. That’s why I prefer to use a web site that offers unlimited public records searches for a reasonable monthly fee rather than paying for each and every search that you do.

Having used both pay-by-search and unlimited search public records web sites I can tell you that you will likely have much more fun when you subscribe to unlimited searches. Why? Because it gives you the power to do whatever and as many searches as you want to. You can search for all of your friends and look up their relatives and neighbors too. Check out your neighbors and the people that you hire to do work for you. The possibilities are endless so give it a try today.

Unlimited Free Background Checks Limited or unlimited searches. You choose. Can I Find a Person by Name Only? Find Someone Online Like I Did Using a free public records website doesn’t have to be difficult.

Attract Only Profitable Customers and More of Them

November 30, 2009

This is a true story:

A financial advisor was speaking to a client who said, “Do you sell group health insurance?” The advisor replied, “Well, did that years ago and I am licensed to do that, but that’s not really my specialty. But I know a guy who does nothing but that. He specializes in that he’s one of the best there is. I’d be happy to send you his contact information.”

The client is pleased. He then tells the advisor, “My wife is having some difficulty in dealing with Medicare supplement issues. Is that something you handle?” Again the advisor says, “Well, I am certainly capable of handling that but that’s not my area of expertise. I know a guy who is well versed in that because that’s all he does. Let me get you his contact information, and he can lend a more precise hand.”

Once again, the client is appreciative of his advisors assistance. As the two carry on their conversation, talks turn to business continuation. “Is that something you can do?” the client asks. “Well, I could do that, and I am licensed to do that, but that’s not specifically what I do. However, I know a guy who is an expert in business continuation because that’s all he handles. I can get you his contact information so he can sort things out for you.”

Finally the client says, “Well, what on earth DO you do if you don’t do all of these other things?”

The advisor explains that he specializes in helping people 65 - 75 years old make final arrangements for their IRA distribution in such a way that allows them to control when they pay taxes.

The client’s expression brightens as he mentions that his wife is about to retire from teaching after 30 years. He says, “She and some of her co-workers, who are also about to retire, are having a tough time finding someone who can help in that area. If you’re willing to meet with about 6-7 other people, I’ll introduce you to her and she can introduce you to the others.”

How do you think the advisor responded to that question?

So, what are the key lessons to learn from this true success story? First, you must know exactly what you want. Many advisors will jumped at any opportunity presented. Even if it was not their strongest area, they would have re-routed the dialogue towards the group health insurance and would have never known about the other opportunities.

Second, you must maintain focus. Even though this advisor was an expert in IRA distributions, he could easily have lost focus and “settled” for one of the other opportunities. By maintaining his focus, he got what he wanted.

Third, he was a resource. It would have been simple for the advisor to say “Sorry, I do not do that.” However, prior to this conversation, the advisor had established a network of professionals with a variety of skills. Providing solutions to different needs is a great benefit to the client. Not only is it good for the client, but the advisor is able to refer business to three different colleagues. How do you believe these advisors will reciprocate? The advisor will receive referrals from them. Being a resource will pay big dividends.

He would have never been able to get in front of those additional prospects had he not been specific about his niche. He maintained his focus and turned away business that wasn’t an area of expertise for him. He was a resource for this potential client. Follow this formula and you will get the clients you want.

Attract Prospects by Differentiating Like This

November 30, 2009

I learned a valuable business lesson from my daughter when she was 22 months old. We were reading a book about animals and one particular page had 18 white ducks and one yellow duck. Every time we turned to that page, she would exclaim “Yellow duck.” That was clearly her favorite duck.

How does that translate to solid business advice? If you want to be noticed, like the yellow duck, you have to be different. Each of the other 18 ducks thinks it is different. When greeting other ducks, each one proudly states “I swim, quack and waddle.” They all sound the same. But, another duck says, “I am the one and only yellow duck.” Which one will most likely be remembered?

My daughter reminded me of basic psychology…DIFFERENT gets your attention and DIFFERENT gets remembered.

Everyone you see falls into one of two categories…either you remember them or you do not. Whether it is a passing face in a crowd or an acquaintance at a party that is easily forgotten, sometimes people do not stick in your mind. The reason for that is simple. Nothing about their appearance, what they did, or what they said triggered your mind to remember them.

If you are the one being forgotten, your business is going to experience some serious challenges. It is not too challenging to determine the results when you are often confused with your competitors, or even worse, immediately forgotten.

Obviously, it is important that you be remembered. On the other hand, being different and remembered is not always good. There are people I remember for unflattering reasons, such as an obnoxious voice, eye-catching physical trait, or horrible fashion sense. Prior to my makeover by the Mrs. I might have been in that last category. The point is this…just being remembered is not the objective. You want to be remembered in a positive manner.

In the business world, I have heard people introduce themselves and say, “I sell life insurance,” or “I do the same thing as other real estate agents.” Is either of those likely to amaze people, engage people, or generate referrals? No. At one meeting an accountant said “I know how to complete a tax return properly.” A couple minutes later, another accountant said “I know how to increase your tax refund by $3,000.” So which one is different? Which one will be remembered?

Upon your first introduction to someone, make it different. Make it memorable. In order to boost referrals and gain new business, you must make people remember you. To do that, you must be different than your competitors. It doesn’t matter if you do the exact same thing as your competitors. It doesn’t even matter if they’re better at it than you are! You can still be more successful than them if you make yourself stand out. Those two accountants may have the exact same knowledge and skills. The first accountant may even be better than the second. However, the second accountant uses a description that is both different and memorable. This leads to more business.

I realize differentiating yourself is easier said than done. You must assess your business, your skills, and your knowledge and determine how you can differentiate yourself from your competition. I’ll address HOW to accomplish that at another time.

In the business world, you cannot afford to be a white duck just like everybody else. You cannot afford to blend in with your competition. You must find at least one trait that can differentiate you from the flock. If you want to be remembered, make sure your ducks are in a row by showing people how you’re different.

Attract Prospects Instead of Chasing Them

November 30, 2009

Before I reveal the secret of effective marketing, I want to explain a fascinating exercise I often utilize. You have probably seen it performed before. I pick a volunteer out of the audience and stand face-to-face with one hand up as if we are about to take an oath. I then move my hand forward until our palms make contact. Then I gently start pushing. Without saying a word, the same thing ALWAYS happens. The other person pushes back.

Although this is an amusing activity, it is very significant. When humans feel someone pushing us, we naturally push back. It is one of several ingrained instincts that many marketers fail to address.

You probably feel this resistance in every sales presentation and sometimes when you are just trying to get an appointment. Why is that? Remember that most people hate “being sold” and find it about as enjoyable as being the antelope trying to escape from a lion. The sale is a fight they do not want to be part of, so they flee. The Fight or Flight mentality has been a part of our instincts for tens of thousands of years. If there is something we do not want to face, we flee.

This leads me to one of my favorite sayings. Several, years ago, I was coaching an advisor who was telling me about a great prospect he had met a month earlier at a party. He said “I know I can close the sale if I can just get the appointment. But, I have left 8 messages in the past two weeks and he has not returned any of them.” Without thinking too much about it, I responded with “If you chase them, they will run.” The more this advisor pushed for the appointment, the more the prospect resisted.

At this point, you are probably thinking “Steve, what a worthless article. We know prospecting and sales are difficult. All you have done is remind me.” Bear with me. We have determined that prospects would rather flee than fight a salesperson and that the harder we push, the more the client resists.

How do you market in a way that does not launch these natural instincts? Many businesses use mass advertising (TV, radio, magazine, newspaper, mailings, etc.) to get your word to thousands of people.

Many years ago, I thought the same thing. We were a medium size operation and I wanted us to become one of the “big boys” in our market. So, I looked to see what those big competitors were doing. Every one of them had full-color, full-page ads in industry trade magazines. Obviously, that must be the solution. So, we opened our pocketbook and shelled out $4800 per month for one ad that would be read by nearly 100,000 prospects. Then we sat in the office with a hand hovering over the phone waiting for the calls to come pouring in. Not one call. At the time, we did not understand marketing.

Do you think Coca-Cola advertises to attract people who have never heard of Coke? No. They just want to stay in front of you. How often have you seen a commercial from a company you have never heard of, and then you went out and bought their product right away? Almost never. Mass marketing is a great way for large companies to stay in front of existing customers, but it is a horrible way to attract prospects who currently do not know you. This is the single biggest misconception small businesses have.

The best way to introduce yourself to new prospects is by using Attraction Marketing. If a prospect is referred to you, recommended to you, or finds you before you find them, you have a better chance of converting this prospect to a client. Attraction Marketing is taking the right steps to draw the clients to you, because if you chase them, they will run.

Earn More Money With Higher Quality Prospects

November 30, 2009

Are you attracting Wal-Mart prospects, Macy’s prospects, or Nordstrom prospects? Let me explain what I mean. Wal-Mart sells white, button-up dress shirts. So does Macy’s. So does Nordstrom. Why would you pay $79 for the Nordstrom shirt when you could get the Macy’s shirt for $34 or the Wal-Mart shirt for $17? If everyone shopped based on price, Nordstrom and Macy’s would not exist. Understanding who will pay more for quality will help you attract prospects who are not “price-shoppers.”

The most obvious reason people are willing to pay more for something is that they really are getting something of greater Actual Value. For example, you may have to pay more for a toaster at Macy’s than one at Wal-Mart. Perhaps the knobs of the more expensive toaster are made of steel and the knobs on the less expensive toaster are made of less-durable plastic. In other words, you “get what you pay for.”

The second reason people are willing to pay more for something is that they are getting something of greater Perceived Value. A friend owned a store in a beach town on Lake Michigan. He had a collection of paintings that were not selling. Going into the last weekend of the tourist season, he decided to discount them, sell them at a loss, and at least get rid of them. So, he told the clerk to slash the price of the pictures from $50 to $20 and then the owner left for a couple days. When he returned, the pictures were gone and the owner was relieved. But, there was a problem when he checked the receipts. He found out that the clerk had added a ‘0′ and made the price $200. When he raised the price of the pictures, they started selling. Why? Because at $50 (or $20) the pictures were considered cheap, but at $200 they were perceived to be quality art.

So, when are people NOT willing to pay more? Consumers will not pay more when products are a commodity…when the products are considered to be identical. Assume your gas tank is getting low and you approach an intersection. On one corner is a gas station selling 87 octane gas for $2.89 and on the other corner is a station selling the same gas for $3.04. Which one do you choose?

Nordstrom and Macy’s do not compete on products considered to be commodities. They have created Actual Value and/or Perceived Value advantages over Wal-Mart.

Now let’s compare the shoppers at Nordstrom and Macy’s with a Wal-Mart shopper. The Nordstrom shopper wants the best (Actual or Perceived) regardless of the price. Money is no object. The Wal-Mart shopper wants the cheapest, regardless of actual or perceived value. The Macy’s shopper is in the middle. They are willing to spend a little more, if they believe they will get more value. They often justify purchase decisions with the saying “you get what you pay for.”

How does this relate to your business? Are you looking for price-shoppers who seek the cheapest solution? Would you prefer consumers seeking the best Perceived Value, regardless of cost? Or, do you want to work with those in the middle?

Whether you are aware of it or not, how you promote your business and talk to prospects will determine which of these prospects you are attracting. To have an effective marketing strategy, you must know which type of prospect you want to attract. If you are looking to avoid the “price-shoppers” you must clearly show the prospects that your product or service is not a commodity. Unless your product is always cheaper than your competitor, you must find a way to create higher Perceived or Actual Value. But, that is a topic for another article.

Easy Survival Food Storage

November 30, 2009

In today’s unstable economy and with threats like climate change and eco-terrorism American families need to have survival food storage, emergency preparedness and 72-hour kits. In the event of a disaster whether it is natural or man-made, local emergency people will be facing the same problems as the rest of us. It may take time three days, 72 hours or even longer for them to come to your assistance. In some circumstances you may find yourself on your own for much longer.

Do not be fooled, we as Americans take for granted the food supply in America. Studies have shown that a typical grocery store has less than one week of food in supply if their supply chains are broke. The average American family has even less. If there is a major problem do you want to have to depend on these places?

Very simply put survival food storage is being prepared. A major part of emergency preparedness is having food storage and I am going to stress the need to be prepared to survive for at least 72 hours, but being prepared for longer is a very good idea to consider as well. In the event of a widespread problem normal food supplies will be depleted quickly and you will be one step ahead to have your own survival food storage.

The problem might not be a disaster; in this troubled economy no one has job security anymore. There are many of us who do not know if we will have a job in the coming weeks or even tomorrow. There is the possibility that there will not be an attack, a major disaster or a catastrophe but what if you lose your job or suddenly have to re-locate. Having survival food storage could work just as well to get you through a few days when money is tight. Not having to worry about buying food could make a huge difference and let you focus on getting back to providing for your family.

The bottom line is to be prepared. There are many reasons that the normal food supply chain could be interrupted and cause mass hysteria across the country. From a massive power grid failure to a true fuel crisis food supplies are vulnerable to being completely shut down.

Here are some food storage tips that are simple and easy to get started.

Always keep a larger than normal supply of the basics like simple grains, dehydrated milk, sugar, salt, oil, flour, garden seeds and storable produce like potatoes, onions, beets, cabbage, etc.

Keep food stored that your family is accustomed too and that you know how to cook. You will want to keep items that need to be replaced for freshness and it will take some work keeping them up. There are also options to have dry food storage that is made specifically for long periods of storage. If you are on a tight budget like most Americans there are pre-packaged kits and you can buy the items one at time.

Shopping at wholesale markets can save you a considerable amount of money on such things as salt, flour, oil and sugar. You might have to buy a larger container than you are used to, but having more will not hurt you.

Protect stored food from rodent and insect infestation by storing it in large containers. Metal containers like coffee containers and tins are the preferred method. You can find containers at places like thrift stores.

Having survival food storage will give you piece of mind. In the case of an emergency relying on yourself is going to be your best bet so be prepared.
