How To Overcome A Disagreement

In our society, most people associate strength of character with standing your ground and proving your point. Don’t ever let anyone get the best of you! When the truth is, it takes much more strength and courage to put your pride aside and genuinely aim to resolve a problem in a healthy, positive manner.

Practice makes perfect and here are some easy steps to follow.

1) Release Your Anger! Go home and vent! A lot! Vent your problem to your most trusted person, but before you do let this person know you just want to talk to someone who will listen. You don’t expect the problem to be solved. Listening to yourself will help you organize your thoughts. If you do not have anyone to vent to, I would suggest taking a piece of paper and a pen or an audio voice recorder and just let it all out.

2) Bring Back Some Good Feelings! Once a little of your anger has been released, go out and have some fun! NO WORK TALK! Take your kids to Chucky Cheese (if that’s fun), or go to a loud bar and watch the game. Just do anything that will help take your mind off work and get your happy thoughts back into your mind. Working out is also a good idea. Aim to release some of your negativity. Too much negativity clouds your judgments.

Tip: Doing some cardio like an aerobics class, dance class or kickboxing sometimes can count for step 1 and 2. It depends on you.

3) Open up your heart! Go home and find a quite place without distraction. Grab a pen and paper and write down everything you are grateful for. These things can be general or specific. This is called the Grateful List. This is important because it will help you lean towards forgiveness and understanding.

4) Brainstorm your solutions! After your mind is no longer completely consumed with negativity, you can now work on forming some positive solutions. Grab a piece of paper and write down everything you would like to talk about. Organize your thoughts.

5) Help the other person! I would suggest approaching the person you are opposing with the intention of only hearing his or her point of view without saying any of your own thoughts. By doing this, you are helping the other person relieve some possible resentment or anger for you (if there is any) and then you can come to a solution on a later date. This is important because it also lets them know they can safely talk to you and that will help overcome the disagreement once you both can safely talk to one another.

About the last step, more often than not, when I do this I discover that the anger that resides in that person really does not have anything to do with me, but involves their own personal stress that they are releasing on me negatively.

Your goal is to be heard when both you and the other are in a better state of mind. You have the right to be heard just as much as the other person.

This is also very important! Make sure you have true intentions of coming to a positive solution! That may sound funny, but many people enjoy the drama and really do not care to resolve.

A Bridal Shower is All About Fun

Pass the dice to the left and continue taking turns throwing the dice. After the pile of gifts is all drawn, continue the game with each woman who throws doubles taking a gift from another player, or exchanging if she already has one. After time expires, each woman keeps the gift she has in her possession. Each woman unwraps her gift. It can be quite amusing to observe the gifts that were most sought during exchanges, especially if these turn out to be the gag gifts.

One game that can be a lot of fun is called “Finish the sentence.” Write down the beginnings of several different sayings and proverbs. Have the women finish each sentence. The catch is that they may not use the correct completion of the sentence. For example, if you write, “A watched pot never _____.” None of the women may answer with “boils.” An appropriate response would be “moves from where you set it.” Or, anything that fits the sentence without using the correct response, would work. After each woman finishes her list, have each one read her answers aloud. The winner is the one with the most unique responses on her list.

International Cost of Living Trends 2009

The objective of expatriate pay programs is to ensure that employee spending power and standard of living is maintained irrespective of global location. How to achieve this has been an issue many organizations spend considerable time on.

Exchange rates are volatile as they are based on short-term factors and are subject to substantial distortions from speculative movements, economic outlook and government interventions. In the short term, exchange rates, even when averaged over a period of time such as a year, are not a good measure of the comparative value of a salary in relation to its comparative international purchasing power. In the short to medium term at least, apparent changes in the comparative level of remuneration between one country and another may be principally a function of changes in the exchange rate.

A far better measure is salary purchasing power parity (SPPP) which is the amount of salary that equalizes the purchasing power of different currencies given the relative cost of the same basket of goods (cost of living) at the exchange rate versus one US Dollar. This means that a given salary, when converted into different currencies at the SPPP rates, will buy the same basket of goods and services in all countries.

The basket of goods and services used in SPPP calculations is derived on an International basis and includes certain items often excluded from expatriate cost of living data (most notably housing costs), however any or all of the 13 basket groups can be included or excluded from a calculation. SPPP’s provide a reasonably good picture of the differences in standards of living for individual’s resident and paid in different countries.

Internationally comparable data is crucial to forming sustainable expatriate pay policies and monitoring progress. Market exchange rates give misleading comparisons because they do not reflect salary purchasing power differences. Salary Purchasing Power Parities account for price differences between countries and so measure real quantities.

The ongoing impact of the credit crisis, slowing global economies, falling house prices, global stock market and exchange rate volatility, together with the US dollar and Euro strengthening against most currencies are all factors contributing to a major change in relative salary purchasing power, which can be seen from the global cost of living rankings as at January 2009.

London has already dropped from the most expensive place for expats to live to now rank 6th. New York has dropped to 50th but is now expected to begin to climb back up the ranking as the global recession impacts other parts of the world. Tokyo has reclaimed the title of the most expensive place in the world for expats in terms of salary purchasing power relative to all other international locations.

The salary purchasing power parity rank comprises cost of living indexes for each of 276 global locations.
