Carats: Measuring Diamonds

October 31, 2008

Whether you are someone who is shopping for an engagement ring or you simply have a love of the history and the glamor of the diamond, you will find that one of the things that you need to understand is carat. Carat is one of the C’s that a diamond is going to be graded on, and it is essentially the unit of mass that has been created specifically for use with gems. Therefore, when you are looking at the carat measurement of a diamond, you are looking at its weight. This measurement of gems and diamonds specifically was set in 1907 at the Fourth General Conference of Weights and Measures.

When thinking about the carat measurement, you will find that a carat is considered to be precisely 200 mg, which in terms of English measurements breaks down to .007,055 of an ounce. A carat might also be known as a metric carat, and it can be divided up into 100 points that are two milligrams apiece.

The measure of a carat is one that has a long and interesting history, just like the diamond itself. Going back more than 500 years, you could easily see that people were fascinated by the Shah Diamond, which was found in central India. It adorned the thrones of generations of rulers before it was sent to Russia as a reparation for the slaying of a Russian ambassador. The Shah Diamond is an 88.7 carat yellow diamond of exceptional clarity.

The carat measurement itself gets its name from a French word that was originally Greek. The Greek word in question was keration, or “fruit of the carob,” and this relates the history of the measurement of diamonds to carob seed. It was once believed that carob seeds were known for their identical and uniform weight, though this was later disproved.

Of course when you think about diamonds, you will find that you are a place where you can think about how they can relate to you! Diamonds are a beautiful addition to any jewelry collection, and you will find that they might be more varied than you think. For instance, you might be interested in the cold and brilliant light that you can get from a white diamond, but don’t forget that diamonds can come in many shades, from pink to brown to green to a steel blue. You will also find that when you are looking into diamonds as jewelry that there are many terrific cuts that can get, including round, oval, marquise, pear and even a delicate heart shape. The right cut can really bring out the diamond so a good choice when you are selecting stones.

When you are looking to incorporate diamonds into your look, remember that you should think about what kind of effect you can get. For instance, are you interested in the sparkle of a single diamond on your hand or around your neck, or are you more interested in a glittering display? Choosing the right kind of diamond jewelry can help you get the simple or glamorous look that you are interested.

When you are looking to purchase a diamond, you will find that it is important to think about what you know when it comes to both the diamond’s history and to the weight that it carries. Make sure that you take a look at your diamond and appreciate it for its worth as well as its weight!

A Digital Photo Album Can Bring A Family Closer Together

October 31, 2008

The fact is, as families grow older, they tend to grow apart. Brothers and sisters who were once inseparable form families of their own, and don’t see each other nearly as much.

Now, that doesn’t mean they become complete strangers, but it does mean that distance starts to take its toll a bit – especially when a move far away is involved.

Of course, there are a lot of ways to keep in touch. Photo sharing is very popular right now, and will continue to be. But just emailing each other a bunch of photos from time to time just seems hollow when you were so close.

A quick and easy way to keep your connections alive

Try creating a digital photo album. There are a lot of people who are doing this right now, and having a great deal of fun with it. Here’s why:

When you share photos by sending them as an email attachment, it’s sort of like telling someone “Hi.” That’s nice, but it lacks depth and meaning.

But when you send someone a digital photo album, it’s more like you’re asking them to sit and have a conversation with you. What’s the difference? Well, with a digital photo album, you can arrange your pictures in a way that has meaning to whoever you’re sending it to.

Also, with a digital photo album, you can tell the story behind the photos. You can add quite a bit of text, if you like, or you can just include a short comment describing the photo. It’s entirely up to you.

Staying in touch with those you love is so rewarding

The point is to use the album as a way of connecting with the people you love in a new and exciting way. So if you’re brother now lives in Texas with his family and you live in Maine with yours, you can do more than just stay current. You can make sure that your families are in touch every step of the way.

Just think how much more fun the Holidays will be when you see each other. Also, more contact means you are more likely to get together more often.

And even if you don’t live far away from the people you love, a digital photo album is still a fantastic way to stay in touch. Take lots of photos at the next family party, upload them to a photo sharing site on the Internet and then create your album. Then, send it off to family and friends and ask them to make comments, or even add their own photos.

Do that once or twice, and you’ll start a new trend! Before you know it, everybody will be having fun creating digital photo albums to share.

If you don’t feel like you’re creative or have a good photographic ability, don’t fear. Everyone will appreciate your effort and they’ll be really glad you took the time to create an album they can all enjoy.

Plus, they’ll be especially happy that you took the time to keep in touch with them in such a unique and fun way!

Matt Smolsky writes for a variety of websites, including Hoorray, a photo sharing site that offers the quickest and easiest way to build a free online photo album, as well as free online photo storage.

Teaching Kids To Go Green

October 31, 2008

When it comes to issues like global warming and our environment, having to keep up with “Going Green” can be very overwhelming sometimes. Amongst a culture of hybrid cars, energy efficient light bulbs and recycled furniture it seems that “Going Green” has endless possibilities. People are now more aware than ever when it comes to the environment. People are learning that taking the extra time to recycle their water bottle rather than throwing it away or buying an item that has been made with recycled items even thought it may cost a bit more is making a large impact on saving our environment. With this ever growing movement parents are now given the valuable opportunity to teach their kids how to care for and protect our environment. It is important to teach children about preservation of our planet because they are the ones who will care for it in the future

As you teach your child tasks such as brushing their teeth or tie their shoes laces and other means of caring for themselves you can also start to show your child how to care for our environment as well. Teaching a child at an early age how to recycle and the importance of recycling gives a child an important responsibility that will last them a lifetime. Simple things such as showing your child how to separate plastics, papers and aluminum cans from regular trash can have an immense effect on how a child views the environment. You can also place a small recycling bin in your child’s bedroom along with their regular trash bin to help them remember to recycle.

But don’t bore your child with more dull responsibilities, you want your children to learn and have fun as well, so what better way to teach them through play. Recycled items have been turned into something as unusual as shoes, diapers and furniture, if you can recycle plastics and paper into those things then why not your children’s play toys. Remember the three R’s of recycling

• Recycle

• Reduce

• Reuse

Green Toys has created a line of toys made that are made entirely of recycled items. For instance their 17 piece tea set is made from 100% recycled plastic milk jugs. In creating toys that are made from recycled products there are less green house gases produced and it saves energy, enough energy that equals 3,000 AAA batteries, power a TV for 3 weeks and run a laptop computer for an entire month. That’s a lot of energy!

Green Toys also has a sand castle set for the summertime beach trips or an indoor gardening kit to get your little ones growing to be a green thumb. Both products are made from 100% recycled plastics as well. These toys are fun for kids to play with and as well as toys that help our environment. So help your child learn about our precious environment, and make a choice that helps it too. Now you can also keep on the cutting edge of the “Go Green” movement and become “green” parent!

Choosing Your Dream Career

October 31, 2008

The path to finding the career of your dreams can sometimes feel so daunting. To make matters worse, it can seem that while you struggle to figure out just what it is you want to do, others have the good fortune of recognizing and living out their dreams everyday.

But rest assured that these people are by far in the minority. So if you’re a part of the majority and are trying to figure out how to do what you absolutely love – or even figure out what you love – there are ways you can get this done. Let’s look at ways you can move toward settling into your dream career …

Look at What Sparks Your Interests

Okay, this is going to take a lot of nerve on your part, but if you want to find your dream career, you’re going to have to go after what you like. Scary, right? You’ve spent so much of your life doing what others have wanted you to do that it’s hard to believe that you are actually allowed to do what is interesting to you. But you are.

Think about it, there are people making a living playing their favorite instrument, dressing up in makeup and “clowning around” or going the traditional route of joining the ranks of Corporate America – and you can do it too. The main way for you to accomplish this goal is to take note of the projects you absolutely love then explore ways to turn that love into a tangible career.

Take Personality Tests

This may sound like an unorthodox route to take, but if you really want to tap into a career that suites you specifically, there are tests you can take to help you determine, based on your interests, what careers would be best suited for you. Two tests you can take online are the Keirsey Temperament Sorter and Ansir Self-Perception tests.

The Keirsey Temperament Sorter is the most widely-used personality test in the world. By looking at your temperament, communication and action characteristics, it helps you determine your organization, career, and personal development attributes. The Ansir Self-Perception test is another personality test that is widely used. It was created to help you identify your dominant strengths and innate potential so that you can quickly move toward what best suits your personality. Both of these tests work well to give you insight into aspects of your personality that you may not have been aware of. But most importantly, they help you correlate those personality traits with various career options, helping to make finding your dream career a little easier.

Try Temporary Work

A third way that you can make strides toward your dream career is by taking on temporary work. Whether you’re linking up with the traditional temporary agency for clerical work, or one that focuses on specific professions, this is a great way to test the waters of different careers without having to commit permanently to any.

The more you’re willing to get out there and search, the more likely you are to find what it is you really love. So don’t be afraid to go after your dream job. You may find it to be the best decision you’ve ever made.

The Top Three Prada Bags of All Time

October 31, 2008

Nine times out of ten, getting a Prada handbag is going to be a good fashion investment. Today, the vast majority of these bags look really nice, are versatile and are trendy additions to your wardrobe. But there are three special bags that Prada has made that are going to stand the test of time and that you going to just keep on carrying season after season, and year after year.

So, what are the best Prada handbags? These are purses that women can carry them around because they are versatile, made of high-quality materials and trendy.

Prada Prize #3: The third best Prada bag is the Prada bowling bag, which came out this year. This bag is cute and timeless, which means that you will be able to carry it wherever you go. Another great about this bag with two small handles is that you can get it in several colors and styles. The Prada bowling bag is boxy and big enough to hold almost anything that you would need. Whether you want it in red, green or a classical color like black, you’ll be able to find it.

Prada Prize #2: The second best Prada bag doesn’t have a name, but the BR2375 is total luxury. Made from buffalo leather (how the buffalos got to Italy is beyond me, but somehow Prada made it happens), this bag is soft and delish. The bag has a push lock closure and the back flap folds over the front of the bag to close it. Everyone will know you are carrying a Prada because of the metal faceplate. This bag is classic and classy.

Prada Prize #1: The number one Prada bag is the shopper’s leather shoulder tote. You may be wondering why a shoulder tote is the number one Prada handbag, and the answer is simple. If you are able to carry a Prada bag with a retail price of over $1000 to the grocery store, and are able to put your purchases from the mall in such a luxurious bag, people are always going to equate you with this bag. With this Prada bag, you are going to be able to carry it everywhere, and everyone will be jealous of your bag.

Now that you know the top three Prada bags, you may want to know the three Prada bags that you should keep your fingers off of. Sure, the celebrities and super models can get away with carrying these bags, but the average woman will just look like a clown with these bags.

Bad Bag #3: Unless you just escaped from the circus or are a nanny, keep away from the Prada Plex Stampato Tote. This bag just looks like a mess. Plus, with a retail price of about $1200 it’s not an affordable mess. Once you carry it, you’ll not be able to carry it again, because everyone will notice this loud bag.

Bad Bag #2: For $2,600, women can get the Prada bag of the future: the metallic gaufre messenger bag. If you are planning on dressing like Judy Jetson for Halloween, this may be the right bag. Otherwise, you may want to pass. Puffy, shiny and quilted aren’t really a good mix.

Bad Bag #1: The Prada Napa Fringe Hobo is another bag that ordinary women won’t be able to carry. Carrying this purse would make any normal woman look like there was a small animal growing out of her arm. The best advice for this bag is to let the celebrities carry it, and just laugh at them.

Sure, Prada is known for good bags, but there are a lot of them that you should not buy. If you think about your purchase and go for a classic bag, you’ll be able to carry it around for a long time.

The 10 Steps to Giving Up Your Designer Handbag Addiction

October 31, 2008

If you can’t open your closet because it is so stuffed with designer handbags that if you even turn the knob, a tidal wave of purses will turn your bedroom into a mess, you need help. If you are trying, unsuccessfully, to curb your designer handbag addiction, here are 10 steps to help you give up your designer purse curse.

Giving up your straight-up Handbag addiction!

1. Unlike with a lot of self-help programs, you don’t want to try and go cold turkey and stop buying handbags altogether. If you are addicted to handbags it won’t work. The first step is to realize that you can’t stop your addiction suddenly.

2. The second step is to make a budget. You aren’t just going to make a budget for your handbags, listing exactly how many Marc Jacobs you can buy versus Coach bags. You are going to make a budget for everything in your life including rent, utilities and car insurance. Yes, it’s a drag, but you have to do it.

3. Now that you have your budget in hand, you are going to limit how many purses you purchase. If you only have $100 extra in your budget, and the Marc Jacobs Clutch costs about $400, you will now know that you can afford to buy one every three months, instead of buying the green leather one and the black one at the same time.

4. If you are having a problem keeping your willpower to not buy a designer handbag, you are going to want to prevent a rash purchase. 20 years ago you would just put the money into a bank, which would have pretty much prevented you from buying a handbag, but with shopping online and ATMs, you are going to want to literally freeze your plastic. Get a big container, fill it with water, put your credit cards in it, and stick it in the freezer. That way, if you want to make a purchase you have to wait for the money to thaw out.

5. Try to avoid temptations. Throw away the tabloids or just don’t purchase them to avoid seeing handbags. If you look in some of these rags, you’ll see that every week a new celebrity is carrying around a different designer handbag. Sure, it’s nice to see who has the same bag that you want, but it’s just too tempting to buy the latest it-bag.

6. If you are feeling a bit depressed about not having the latest bag, organize your own collection. Even if you only have a couple of purses, you can spend the time that you would normally spend shopping doing a bit of work on them.

7. If you are sick and tired of carrying around the same handbag, you may want to take some of your older bags out of retirement. Sure, they may have been popular couple years ago, but that doesn’t mean you still can’t carry them around today. A good handbag will always be a good handbag.

8. To get something new into your wardrobe, you may have to trade or borrow. Hey, it’s won’t cost you a lot of money, and no one has to know it’s not yours.

9. Handbags are expensive things to collect, so you may want to start on another collection. Why not start a stamp collection? Stamps are only $.49 so you could literally buy hundreds of them (if not thousands) for the price of one handbag.

10. If it is that tough to give up your handbag addiction, you may just want go ahead and buy one. You’ll be disappointed in yourself, but at least you will have the satisfaction of carrying around the latest bag!

Words of Wisdom For New Parents - What Your Child Really Wants in a Home

October 31, 2008

When you welcome a new child into your family, it is an exciting time. Parents usually spend a great deal of resources - time and money - to prepare for the new family member.

As someone who has been parenting for over two decades and has watched my children grow from tiny babies to productive adults, I can understand that any helpful words of wisdom for new parents need to be about more than just which stroller to buy.

My children can tell you that it is not the toys or furniture or gadgets that got them to where they are today. It was the values in our home. Here are a few of the most important values that we used in our family.

- Stability.

Stability is a value that is in short supply these days. There was a time when families often lived in the same home for years and kids attended the same schools from start to finish. A community provided stability just by being there. Those days, for the most part, are gone.

We moved a few times when our kids were growing up and they had to learn to deal with those realities. A lot of that training was good for them, although difficult at the time. As parents, we learned that it was up to us to provide a home of stability for our kids because the externals in our lives were quite transient.

So we focused on making our marriage strong, so the kids could depend upon our relationship together. We focused on nourishing long term friendships so the kids would have stable adult relationships to relate to as they grew. We committed to choosing a church community we could be a part of for years and years. When the kids developed healthy friendships that supported our family values, we made sacrifices so that the kids could maintain those friendships as long as possible.

- Respect.

Cultivating respect in a home means cultivating long term benefits. Want to have teens that will listen to you someday? Develop a respectful homelife now.

Being respectful to your spouse and earning his or her respect in return is one of the best things you can do for your marriage, too. And the best thing you can do for your kids is to nurture your marriage.

Teach your kids how to earn respect. Listen to them and honor their opinions. Then be the leader in your home and make the decisions that will take the best care of your family, whatever sacrifices you need to make. When your kids see that you put your family above your own self interests, they will know they can trust you. And the respect will follow.

- Kindness.

Kids argue. Parents bicker. Being a part of a family means learning how to handle day-to-day conflicts and frustrations. The family is the training ground for being human.

Your kids WILL learn something in your family, the question is, WHAT will they learn? It’s easy to be sloppy with relationships; it’s more difficult to be intentional. Make it a priority in your household to practice random kindnesses. This will smooth out a lot of the daily angst that naturally arises in a family.

You can do simple games such as requiring that family members do two acts of kindness for every act of hurt, whether intentional or accidental. It gets people thinking in terms of being good to each other. It helps people think twice before they’re careless with one another. It just works.

As you begin down the rewarding path of parenting, remember these words of wisdom for new parents. Focus on filling your home with stability, respect and kindness and watch your family flourish.

Parenting – When Does the Responsibility Start and When Does it End?

October 31, 2008

Parenting is the raising and nurturing of children in a way that empowers them to lead a better, safer and secure life. But when does the responsibility of the parent actually start? And when does it really end?

In my opinion, the responsibility starts before the birth of the child. In fact, it starts even before the conception! And the shocking reply to the second question is – it never ends!

When you give birth to a child, it is important that you are physically, financially and mentally prepared to take responsibility of its rearing. You should be confident that, under the present given circumstances, and taking into account your future circumstances as you foresee them, you will manage to nurture your child at least to the point that you can take care of their physiological, social, educational and security needs.

Once you’re fully prepared, your parenting responsibility moves to the next stage – after conception and before birth. The mother should not smoke or drink during pregnancy, it adversely affects the child. This could be to the extent of being physically or mentally retarded (or both). If the father smokes, it is important not to smoke when his wife is around. This means that she should stay away from all smokers – passive smoking is almost as dangerous as active smoking. Taking care of one’s own mental and physical health, avoiding stress, having an overall good mood and being in a happy state of mind, etc are some of the things a mother should do during pregnancy. In fact, it is said that the mother’s environment is 100% responsible for the child’s values, even before birth. This includes the music she listens to, the movies that she watches, her thoughts, etc.

Next comes the stage just after the birth of the child. I will purposely skip this section as this information is very common and you can easily get it by searching on google. You will also find this information at http://www.bharatbhasha.com/parenting.php

During parenting, parents play different roles of life which include but not limited to:

Policeman: You need to analyze when it is right to let the child have its way and when you should firmly put your foot down. It is all about balance and socio economic conditions. Give some freedom when required but deny something that is not good for him / her. This does not necessarily have to be similar to a policeman’s behavior, but you can lovingly make the child understand what is good for him and what isn’t.

Friend: More often than not, children trust their friends more than their parents. If you can be “that friend”, you can be assured that the child won’t hide anything from you, much less, do something against your wishes. If you’ve created that attitude from its early understanding stages, you shouldn’t have a problem in accomplishing this goal.

Detective: Yes, you need to keep a hawk’s eye on your child. And at times, it may even be necessary to contract a real detective if you suspect the whereabouts of your child. While some parents do not agree to this on the pretext that they trust their children, I will still agree to it. You can trust the child but you cannot trust the environment, your child’s friends, and the overall things that try to change or manipulate the thoughts, the feelings, the attitude and the general outlook on life, of your child. If you do not believe me, trying answering this question and see for yourself:

Have you trained your child to the point that they can easily understand when someone is trying to persuade / manipulate them to do something which is wrong, and they are completely fulfilled when it comes to all of their physiological needs, their social needs, their need to feel needed, their need to be noticed and felt understood, their need to be right, and their need to have a sense of power?

If even one of these is missing, it means that you need to keep a check on his / her belongings, conversations, behavior, attitude, spending, etc, even if you don’t like to. If you can afford a big allowance and you want him / her to enjoy it, at least make it a point to keep track of the expenses.

Due to limited space, I will have to end this article here. Do remember – your responsibility of parenting continues even after the child grows up, finishes school, finishes college, gets married, and has his own children. The most dreaded words that a parent fears to listen (but many have to listen) are “If you can’t take care of me, why did you give birth to me?” For some more great and free parenting information, do visit http://www.bharatbhasha.com/parenting.php.

The Sure Shot Success Formula

October 31, 2008

There are only 3 things that are required to be successful:

1. Knowledge.

2. Motivation.

3. Action.

But what does “success” really mean?

In reality, success could have entirely different meanings for different people, sometimes even radically opposite! It all depends on their individual goal.

• For some people, success means to make a lot of money, buy cars, a house, maybe a private jet, etc.

• For some, it means to be healthy enough to live up to almost a hundred years “in prime health”.

• Some people want to become famous in their country (or even the world)!

• For some people, success means dominating the whole world in their chosen market.

• Some people consider success as having a loving life partner. Nothing else matters to them.

• Again, some consider providing the best education and values to their children as their ultimate success.

I could go on, but I do not want to bore you… your idea of success could be one or more of the above (or maybe all of them). Or something entirely different. Whatever is it that you want to achieve in life, it is not only possible, it’s probable.

Knowledge: I told you earlier that the first thing required to be successful was knowledge. To become successful in anything, you first need to have the right knowledge. There are several ways to achieve this: books, courses, seminars, audios, videos, tutorials, workshops, one on one training, etc. In fact, you can even get a lot of information for free on the internet. But the problem is, not all the “so called free” information you get on the internet is correct. Some of the information is plain wrong and misleading. Sometimes, this can be disastrous. This is because once you believe in some particular information, it is extremely difficult (and sometimes impossible) to de-program your brain and feed it the correct information. Now, this does not necessarily mean that “all free information is crap” and “all paid information products are great”. I have personally purchased expensive courses which were crap, and come across free information that was excellent. But this was rare. Additionally, when someone is selling some information (packaged in a pdf ebook, physical book, video tutorials, password protected membership website, or any other method) it is far more likely that the person has taken a lot of effort to ensure that the product has been created by putting in a lot of research, personal experience and has been tested to live up to its expectations. Only then will the creator of the product ensure the long term success of its sales. It has to benefit the customer in some way or the other, especially saving the time to research himself / herself. And since time is actually the “most important resource” in the world for any human being, the successful people minimize the wastage of this valuable resource by “buying it”.

This, my friend, it the first “real secret” of successful people! Look, nobody was born with all the necessary knowledge right from their mother’s womb. The successful people learnt it, were motivated enough to implement it, and finally, took the necessary action. They also probably got the “correct knowledge” right from the beginning. Now, some of you may argue with me that there could be other factors that were responsible for their success. Some of these could be:

1. Luck.

2. Support (financial support, peer support, good contacts, etc).

3. Karma (also from past life?).

And guess what? I will not argue with you. You may be partly right (or 100% right). OK, so now what? Will you sit back and let these factors influence your success, or will you lead your life to success?

Motivation: After knowledge, the most important thing you need to succeed is motivation. While the most effective and result oriented motivation is self motivation, there is no harm in taking the assistance of other things. These include but is not limited to: reading books, taking courses, listening to / watching motivational material, taking part in activities that motivate you, forming a like minded support group where you can meet and exchange views and ideas freely, joining an existing group, or simply doing anything that motivates you to do whatever is required to be successful.

Action: The single most important factor that differentiates between successful and unsuccessful people is – successful people take action and unsuccessful ones procrastinate. Look, if you don’t have enough knowledge, you can hire people who have knowledge. Knowledge is not power, applied knowledge is. So don’t be afraid to fail, just take action. Don’t try to wait until you can deliver something that is perfect, because you will never reach that goal. It took Thomas Edition ten thousand trials before he could invent the light bulb. He says that he did not fail 10000 times, but he discovered 10000 ways in which a light bulb cannot be made! So remember – the faster you take action, the faster you will discover stuff that doesn’t work, if you fail. Slowly and gradually, your failure to success ratio will go on decreasing!

How to Choose the Acne Product That Will Work Best For You

October 31, 2008

This article provides a list of all the acne medication currently available. The descriptions of the medication will help you decide the best acne product for your skin.

There are many acne products on the market and it can be very confusing as to which one will work best. By understanding what each of the different ingredients that are commonly found in acne medication, you will have a better understanding of what acne product is right for you and your skin.

Salicylic Acid

Dead skin cells can get caught in pores causing clogging. This acne product slows down dead cells from sloughing off of your skin. In addition, salicylic acid can help destroy whiteheads and blackheads. Use this product sparingly as it can irritate skin. It is best to start with a lower dose of salicylic acid at around .5% and if this does not work gradually increase up to 2%.

Benzoyl Peroxide

This acne product is the most popular over the counter treatment on the market. It kills bacteria that can cause acne. In addition, is cleans away oil and dead skin preventing pores from getting clogged. Be careful with its use as it can dry out your skin and produce redness, scaling and some swelling. In addition, benzoyl peroxide can increase the skin’s sensitivity to the sun. It is best to start with a lower dose of 2.5% and gradually increase as long as your skin shows no negative reaction to this product.

Acetone and Alcohol

These two acne products can be found in liquid astringents or other face washes. They remove oil, dirt and make up from skin quite effectively. However, they can dry out skin and may cause burning when applied.
