How to Get Your Child Moving!
September 28, 2008
Are you concerned about the amount of time your children are spending indoors on sedentary activities? If you were to name the last game he or she played, would it be electronic? Our children need to get outside and play for more reasons than just exercise, though that is a very important one.
Children also need to get outside of their heads and just be. They need to run and jump and climb and explore. (You and I both know they will do that in the den, but if they do it outside, you’ll both be happier.)
- They need to get their daily allotment of sunshine to reset their body’s inner clocks, which will help them sleep better at night.
- They need to go fast and feel the breeze on their face.
- They need to go slow and see the clouds move across the sky.
- They should ride a bicycle or a skateboard or a foot peddled go-cart.
- They should sit still while they catch their breath from going fast.
Your children also need you to get out there and join them. Throw the ball around, take a walk, go for a family bike ride, set up one of those portable basketball hoops in the driveway or walk up to the local playground. Children learn by doing and watching what we do. If we sit on the couch and watch television after we send them outside, we are not sending a consistent message. Most children’s faces absolutely light up when Mom or Dad join them outside in their games.
If you are not into playing games, then just step outside and sweep the sidewalk. Be out there with them for at least a little while. Maybe you could spend an hour a day all week pulling weeds out of your flowerbeds while the children play. They may join you for a bit while you work, but be prepared for them to wander off to play.
They need to explore their environments and spend some time close to nature. No, you don’t have to go camping or fishing if that isn’t your thing. Take a walk by the edge of the retention pond and look at the minnows. Talk in a hushed voice when the egret lands so you don’t disturb his dinner.
Notice the baby frogs hopping away from the pond towards the edge of the wooded area. Pick one up gently for a minute, but insist that it must be let go to be happy. Notice the fantastic spider web with the magnificently humongous spider in it. Agree that spiders are not for petting. Listen to the chatter of your child as she notices the things around her.
All outdoor activities don’t need to be exercise, but some of it should. Follow your child’s interest. If your child is social and enjoys the rules and competition of sports games, then sign her up. If he would rather hang with a few friends and set his own pace, then that basketball hoop is a solid investment for one on one for years to come. Even a rousing game of freeze tag can be considered exercise if it lasts long enough.
Most importantly, send your child outside to play. Whatever game or activity works for you and your child, do it. Life isn’t in that little electronic box, it’s outside waiting for the both of you.

How to Raise Healthy Kids
September 28, 2008
There are so many obstacles to having healthy kids in our society today. Everything from what they eat to what they do with their spare time can contribute to weight gain and unhealthy bodies. We want our children to be healthy, we just need help figuring out what the potholes are that we should be looking for.
Our standard American diet is known in health food circles as the SAD diet. There are quite a few ingredients in processed foods that are supposed to be good for us but, in fact, are not. For example, that whole wheat bread you’ve bought your family most likely has high fructose corn syrup in it. The fruit snacks that look healthy, (they’re fruit, right?) almost certainly have food dyes in them. The peanut butter, a good source of protein and a favorite for lunchboxes because it won’t spoil, will most likely have partially hydrogenated oils in it. All of these ingredients are known to cause health problems and should be carefully avoided.
How do you avoid them, you ask. It may seem difficult and time consuming at first, but the careful consumer will read the labels for these three high-risk ingredients. There are some enlightened manufacturers who are changing their ingredients for the better.
The good news is, as more parents become aware of and avoid these high-risk ingredients, more healthy alternatives will become available. There are already companies who make fruit snacks using minute amounts of vegetable juice to add color instead of artificially manufactured food coloring. (Which is often made from petroleum.)
There is peanut butter available without partially-hydrogenated oil, you’ll just have to hunt for it a bit. The bread is harder, even fresh made deli whole wheat bread often has high-fructose corn syrup in it. Often, health food stores are the only place to get a truly healthy loaf of bread.
Our children’s hobbies also put them at risk. Watching television and playing video games, even for an hour each evening robs them of the opportunity to interact socially with others. It also keeps them sitting still instead of running, jumping and playing in the fresh air, which is, by the way, healthier than indoor air. Instead of riding their bikes up to the park to play a game of basketball with their friends, they are pushing buttons while a computer animated basketball goes through a hoop.
It is so much better for them to develop hand eye coordination by actually playing real basketball with a real hoop. Even if you don’t have one of those portable basketball hoops in your driveway, there is probably one at a local school or playground.
Fine motor skills can be developed by having them help you snap the fresh green beans you picked up for dinner. No beans? Have them wash the silverware for you after dinner tonight. Anything you can think of that they will use their fingers to do will help them develop these fine motor skills. They do not need a video game to teach them this or any other skill.
Changing our lives entirely at one time seems quite overwhelming and is, in reality, unnecessary. Once you are aware of the pitfalls to children’s health, you can take steps to work in the right direction.
If your child is used to playing video games or watching television every evening, send them outside to play for 15 minutes first. After a month or so, make it 30 minutes, then 45. At the same time, read labels as you do your grocery shopping. Set a goal to find one new item each trip that is a healthier option that your regular brand. These small adjustments will go a long way to investing in your child’s health.

Top 3 Secrets On How To Decide What Kind Of Person You Are Looking For In Your Profile
September 28, 2008
Once you know (or have a vague idea of) what kind of relationship you’re looking for, now you have to decide what kind of person you’re looking for. Every match that you meet is going to be different, but you should have a good idea about the type of mate that you’re interested in and the type that you’re definitely not interested it.
Filling in the section of your bio about the kind of person that you’re looking for can be quite daunting. What should you write? How can you describe your perfect mate? Here are some tips about making sure the type of person that you’re interested in is clear.
1. Tell me what you want
It’s easy to want to start off your section with a string of adjectives. I.E. I’m looking for someone smart, funny, nice, pretty, interesting, kind, sweet, strong, fun, passionate, driven, etc. But doesn’t everyone think that they fill most, if not all, of these requirements?
One way to avoid doing this while still getting your point across is to give examples of the qualities that you’re looking for. For instance if you to date someone who is interesting then you can write “I’m looking for a man who will debate politics with me.” This way the person reading your profile knows that someone who can talk about politics would be interesting to you.
2. Now is the time to be superficial
Do you like tall men? Do you like dark-haired women? Most people have a certain body type or a set of physical attributes that they’re interested in. You know what you like, so let the reader know about it.
But be gentle when dealing with this issue. Don’t write “no fatties.” This reflects badly on you and may turn off potential matches. Instead you can write “I like women with a slender figure.” That way you state what you want without sounding crass.
But also make sure not to go overboard. If you find yourself giving a head to toe description of your idealized mate or theoretically combining different parts of celebrities to make up the embodiment of physical perfect then just stop writing. Think about what physical features are important to you and describe them without being too specific.
Writing “I’m attracted to men who are taller than me,” is much better than writing “I want a man who is between 6″0′ and 6″4′. You might discover than a man who is 5″11′ is just your type.
Does age matter? Sometimes, but not always. While you might plan on dating someone who is in a specific age range, you have to keep in mind that age doesn’t equal maturity and experience doesn’t equal wisdom. Having a sensible idea of how old you’d like your mate to be is helpful, but also allow some room for someone who might be outside of your age range.
3. Lifestyle
If you want someone to go clubbing with, put that in your profile. If you want someone who likes to rent movies and curl up on the couch, then write that. It’s important to be flexible and want to try out your partner’s interests and have them take part in yours.
But you should think about your limits. If you’re an introvert you run the risk of wearing yourself out if you go clubbing every night. If you’re an extrovert you might be bored to tears if you stay in all the time.
It’s also important to know how the other’s schedule works. If they work during the day and you work at night, you’re not going to get a chance to see each other allow. If you arrive home from work exhausted and your partner arrives home energized, you’ll also have a conflict of interests.
One huge component to this is if you have children or your partner has children. There may be logistical issues. You or your partner might not be able to go out every night because someone has to look after the children. There may also be issues about whether the children like the other person and whether or not this will cause stress between the parents are the child.

Ways to Lower Your Power Bill and Save Money
September 28, 2008
Depending on where you live in the US, your power bill can be a real burden on your monthly expenses. During the summer in Las Vegas last year, my bill was hitting around $250 a month. That’s before I learned the key tips to lowering my power bill to save money and go greener.
Light bulbs
Although fluorescent light bulbs may be a bit more expensive, the investment into them is well worth the price. The cost of using a single standard incandescent light bulb costs the same as using 6-10 fluorescent bulbs. The fluorescent bulbs last up to 10 times longer as well. There are various shapes and types to choose from which include attractive compact units that give off a pleasing, soft illumination like traditional bulbs.
“If every American home replaced just one light bulb with an ENERGY STAR qualified bulb, we would save enough energy to light more than 3 million homes for a year, more than $600 million in annual energy costs, and prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions of more than 800,000 cars.”
Stop those vampires!
These are not your regular blood sucking vampires, but never the less they do suck the energy from your home and the money out of your wallet. Devices like DVR’s, Digital Cable and Satellite convertors, VCR’s, DVD players, TV’s, computers, radios, electric razors, battery chargers and so on drain power even when you think they are off. Usually, these devices just go into standby mode as long as they are still plugged in. The easiest solution is to buy a power strip to plug the devices into or unplug the devices in general. When you’re not using them, just flick the power strip off or unplug them and these energy vampires will no longer be siphoning power and raising your electric bill.
Air conditioners
During the long, hot summers here in Las Vegas is when our power bills reach record breaking heights. The main suspect in all this is definitely the AC. Even the Power Companies tell you this. A lot of central air conditioners now come with a control pad that lets you adjust the house’s temperature on the fly. Although it’s a good idea to turn it down or up when you feel the need, a better solution is to program your AC to cool the house at certain temperatures during certain times of the day. My household is set at 80 degrees Fahrenheit throughout the hottest periods of the day and at night around 10pm; it goes to 78 degrees so that the wife and I can sleep comfortably. In the morning at 8am, it kicks back up to 80 degrees again (You’ll see why it’s so important in the next section below). This routine runs all 7 days a week. That way I don’t have to worry about adjusting the temperature all the time and if I’m not at home (vacation or away) it maintains itself. If you want to save even more money, try opening your windows throughout the day and turn the AC off.
Use appliances during non peak times
Just like a cell phone service that offers nights and weekends free, Power Companies have their peak and off-peak hours. I didn’t know this for a very long time and I can tell you that it saves you a lot of money! So how can you take advantage of this? During peak hours (here in Nevada it’s about 1pm-7pm) limit your appliance and device activities. If you’re not using your TV, Computer, DVD player and so on, then turn them off through the power strip or unplug them so they are not siphoning energy. Set your air conditioner to about 80 degrees or so during the day. Instead of drying your clothes in the dryer, hang your clothes to dry outside. This works very well in areas with high summer temperatures. During off-peak hours at night, do your laundry, run the dishwasher and dry your clothes. I also set my AC to 78 degrees at night because it’s still very hot during the evening and it’s harder to sleep when you’re too hot. Also remember, wash your hands and dishes in the sink with cold water as hot water uses energy to heat it up. Below is a break down of the peak and off-peak hours and prices for Nevada Power. As you can see, during peak hours, the price is 21-23 cents as compared to 7-8 cents. You do the math. So make sure you check your power company’s website or call customer service and find out the breakdown for your state.
Price per kWh for Summer Peak
1-7 p.m. June 1 thru Sept 30
23.081? kWh Single Family
21.972? kWh for Multi-Family
Summer Off-Peak
7:01-12:59 p.m. June 1 thru Sept 30
7.578? kWh Single Family
8.079? kWh for Multi-Family
Your water heater
Here’s another way to take advantage of your power company’s off-peak hours. The electric water heater in your home draws almost as much power as anything else in your house. Any easy solution for this is to put your water heater on a timer. Set it to turn off at around 6am and to come back on at 7pm. A lot of heaters have enough insulation and are big enough to maintain the heated hot water throughout the day. If there is ever an occasion where you need more hot water than what is already being held, simply turn on the hot water heater and you’re good to go.
The refrigerator/freezer
Most people only utilize one, maybe two refrigerators/freezers in their house. Older refrigerators and freezers can use up to three times more power than the newer energy efficient ones. In the end, this runs up your bill. What you can do is get rid of them. I know that Nevada Power runs a free program where they will pick up your old appliance for free as well as give you $30 for it just for recycling it through them. This is a great way to lower your monthly power bill, earn some extra cash and help the environment.
By cutting back on power, you’re helping the environment, saving yourself money and you can educate other people about what you now know. After applying these changes myself, my power bill went from $250/month last summer to under $150/month this summer.

4 Steps to an Eco Friendly Nursery
September 28, 2008
Taking care of the environment is important to many of us. We try to incorporate green and healthy living into as many areas of our lives as we can. We especially want to focus on things that impact our children’s health: the food they eat, the toys they play with, and other items they use. This often starts with an eco friendly nursery.
Here are some ways to make this happen, in four simple steps.
Step One: Think about the materials used in your furnishings. Steer clear of items that are made or painted with materials containing lead, formaldehyde, or other dangerous materials. You will instead want to look for all natural wood and cloth products.
Thankfully manufacturers are getting wise to what parents want, and there are many options for non-toxic paint and furniture. You can obtain furniture without dangerous chemicals such as flame retardants that outgas into the air and linens made from organic cotton. Your child can have an attractive and healthy room.
In addition, find simple old fashioned toys for your tot. Some of the best toys are the classics. Wooden blocks, wooden train sets and cloth dolls inspire imagination much more than electronic toys that break easily and get thrown into the landfill. What’s more, plastic toys often contain harmful chemicals such as BPA and phtalates. A good rule of thumb: If a plastic toy has a strong chemical odor when you take it out of its packaging, it’s outgassing toxins. Steer clear of these, especially for babies who put everything in their mouths.
Step Two: Look for organic. You will be surprised at the availability and options that are out there for using organic items in your nursery today. From bedding to mattresses to your baby’s diapers and layette, there are a variety of organic options to choose from on the market today. Many of the best quality items are made by work at home moms or in cottage industries.
If finances are tight, focus on buying items that touch baby’s skin for the longest period of time. Bedding – if your baby sleeps in a crib – and cloth diapers should be organic or at least untreated, unbleached cotton.
Step Three: Say “yes” to the old. Maybe you have some items from a previous baby that are still useful. Or perhaps a friend or family member wants to gift you with a family rocker, cloth diapers or clothing. Go ahead and accept as long as the item in question is still safe – you can check online for recalls. Recycling old items and buying used is a great way to go green in the nursery and save a lot of money too.
Step Four: Be green when you clean. Once you have set up an eco friendly nursery don’t ruin by using harsh chemical cleansers and air fresheners in it. Make sure you buy eco friendly cleaning items too.
Children and babies are especially vulnerable to toxins in the air in our homes. Not only do they breathe faster and therefore take in more chemicals into their lungs, but their brains are still developing meaning the impact is greater on their health. Grocery store shelves now have a nice variety of reasonably priced non-toxic cleaning supplies for you to try.
Taking these steps will have you on your way to an eco friendly nursery that is healthy and safe for your new addition.

An Event Planners Guide: 8 Steps to a Better Event Registration Process
September 28, 2008
Did you know that your event registration process can significantly impact your registrations? A smooth registration process can change the way they look at your business. It can decrease complications and complaints at your trade show, meeting, or seminar. It can even lead to more registrants and lower no show rates.
Use this report to revile the little things that make life simpler for your registrants - while greatly reducing your own workload.
#1 Do the work for your competitors: Many event registrants are frustrated by the length of time it takes to fill out a registration form. Yet many of these same registrants are previous customers of the organization holding the event. That means there’s no reason these event organizers should require them to re-submit every piece of personal information.
Instead, all event organizers should be using auto-recall to pre-populate personal and business information whenever possible. Not only does this practice dramatically reduce time spent in the registration process, but it also decreases the number of people who abandon the process and reduces errors in your reporting. This simple feature can improve the attendee experience while making sure you always have accurate contact information for follow-ups and promotions.
#2 Make Networking Easier with Directories: As social networking becomes more important to attendees both before and after events, event organizers increasingly depend on good networking opportunities to make their events stand out. Those opportunities start during the registration process.
Make sure you’re providing a quick link to a directory of event attendees both during your registration process and in your confirmation email. The kind of information you provide on that directory will vary, but many organizers include names of attendees, email addresses and even a list of sessions people are attending. This technique immediately engages your attendee with your event, allowing her to reach out to friends or set up meetings.
#3 Put Your Attendees in the Driver’s Seat: A single miscommunication can ruin an attendee’s experience at an event. So, why do 80% of event planners still rely on manual systems to manage things like contact information, hotel reservations and nearly every attendee preference?
Take the time to set up a way for your registrants to choose their own preferences and make changes to those preferences before the event. The best registration process will make this easy for attendees, and a select few will even provide reports that can be shared with hotels, caterers and event planners in real time. These shared reports ensure that all preferences are updated and accurate at all times, leading to stress-free attendees and smoother events.
#4 Get Rid of Paper-Based Processes: Event organizers often worry that high-tech registration options will alienate a portion of their target audience. Yet you’ll be surprised how quickly even your most traditional users will adapt to online registration. In fact, many event organizers have found that removing paper registration all together has led to higher attendance, happier attendees and much fewer complications at events.
Case in Point: The Religious Conference Management Association worried that its traditional, faith-based group would struggle with online church event registration. Yet it knew that its lengthy and arduous paper registration process was frustrating for attendees and costly for the organization. Last year, however, more than 85% of its annual conference attendees registered online - and the organization was flooded with compliments on the new, easier registration process. In addition, RCMA chose to eliminate paper surveys after its event and move all post-show follow up online, which increased its response rate from 5% to 32%.
#5 Re-Confirm to Eliminate No Show: Are you tired of dealing with no-shows at events? If you’re like most event planners, seeing a stack of unused name badges at the end of an event is frustrating. But in many cases, it’s not the registrants fault. Instead, the failure to recognize no-shows before events falls on the shoulders of the event organizer.
The good news is there is a way to identify no-shows before your events - yet it’s one of the least-used features in event registration. It’s called “click-to-confirm” reminders, and it allows event organizers to send a series of triggered email reminders leading up to an event, asking attendees to confirm that they will be attending the event. This practice allows organizers to weed out people who have changed their minds and open up spaces for sold out events. In addition, the extra action taken by your attendees reminds them about the event and reaffirms their commitment to attend.
Case in Point: Grant Writing USA, a leading provider of workshops and educational materials that focus on grant writing and grant management, had a big problem with excessive no shows at its workshops. The organization now sends click-to-confirm emails for all events, and that practice has reduced its no show rate to nearly zero.
#6 Encourage Groups: More than 30% of attendees register as a group, and research shows that attending events in a group improves the experience. Yet most event organizers fail to encourage groups. In fact, most registration systems fail to even automate group registration, leading to lost opportunities and frustrated group leaders.
There are two important things you should be doing to encourage group registrations: Provide discounts for people who register as part of a group. This practice not only increases attendance, but increases attendees’ satisfaction at your events.
Second, make group registration as easy as possible by handling it within your standard registration process. Make sure it’s easy to add group members by streamlining the process and auto-inserting information where possible. Also, don’t make the mistake of failing to communicate with individual group members. Make sure your system is set up to send confirmations and reminders to the group leader and every member of the group.
A single miscommunication can destroy an attendee’s experience at an event.
So, why do 80% of event organizers still rely on manual processes to manage things like meal preferences, room blocks and nearly every attendee preference? Take the time to set up a way for your attendees to choose their own preferences and make self-service changes to those preferences before the event. The best registration systems will make this process easy for attendees, and a select few will even provide reports that can be shared with hotels, caterers and event organizers in real time. These shared reports ensure that all preferences are updated and accurate at all times, leading to happier attendees and smoother events.
#7 Build Better Badges: A badge is a badge, right? Nope. Not anymore. In fact, top event organizers are realizing that badges can play a crucial role in tying registration information to the event. Most sophisticated registration platforms will allow you to enhance your badges with group information, color coding and even an agenda.
Make sure you’re branding your badges, agendas and signage to match your registration form. In addition, provide your attendees with a complete list of their session selections and preferences when they receive their badge. This practice will immediately address any issues before confusion sets in, and it will remind your attendees of the selections they made during the registration process.
#8 Make Every Question Relevant: If you confuse attendees, you lose them. Usability studies show that attendees struggle with long registration forms, particularly when those forms contain information that isn’t relevant to the attendee. More and more event organizers are using something called conditional logic to avoid that pitfall.
Conditional logic is based on statements, which use triggers within the registration form to dynamically display appropriate information. So, for example, if I have a golf networking event, I may ask an attendee if they would like to attend. If that attendee answers “no,” they will never see information on tee times, t-shirt sizes or transportation. On the other hand, if that attendee chooses “yes” he will automatically see the appropriate questions.
Very complicated events are using conditional logic to dramatically streamline the registration process, but even small events can use this technology to greatly reduce registration headaches for attendees while reducing workload for event organizers.

An Event Planners Guide: 7 Ways Online Registration Cuts Workload
September 28, 2008
Meeting planners ranked “Workload” as the #1 trend impacting their job and industry. Discover seven ways in which meeting planners are cutting their workload in half by using online registration. See why online registration is the fastest growing tool in meeting planning today.
In MPI’s Future Watch survey, meeting planners ranked “Workload” as the #1 trend impacting their job and industry. “Overworked and underpaid” couldn’t be a more appropriate way to describe meeting planners today… juggling location logistics, hotels, catering, agendas, marketing, AND the millions of little details relating to registering people for their events.
According to industry-expert Corbin Ball, 80% of meeting planners are really missing out by managing their registrations using paper, spreadsheets, and home-grown systems. They are missing out on cutting their workload in half because they are not using an online registration system. In a recent survey, 342 meeting planners estimated their workload was cut by 55% on average after switching to an online event registration system.
A good online registration system eliminates a lot of work by automating tasks that meeting planners used to do manually like data entry, reporting, mailing, and payment processing work. Below are seven ways a good online registration system can cut a meeting planner’s workload in half.
#1 Cut data entry work
If you are using paper registrations or web forms that get emailed to you, then you have data entry or transfer hassles… a time consuming process that leaves you struggling with illegible handwriting and correcting wrong information. An online registration system takes the registration data right from the online form, stores it in an online database where you can access any registrant’s info at anytime, and runs an unlimited number of reports with a click of a button.
#2 Cut reporting work
If you use Excel spreadsheets or home-grown databases to organize your data, then
you have the ongoing task of transferring and compiling data to get the totals you need for your event. An online registration system will automatically compile and tally all of your data for you… in real-time. With a click of the button you can run summary reports that tell you how many people are attending, how much they paid, and how much beef or chicken to order. You can also give links to these reports to your clients or vendors so they can get up-to-the-minute information without you having to send updates.
#3 Cut mailing work
When someone registers using paper or a web form, your manual work has just begun… printing, copying, folding, mailing, emailing, repeat. An online system will eliminate these time-consuming activities by automatically emailing everyone right when they register with their receipt, invoice and event materials. It also makes reminders a breeze when you can email everyone with a click of a button.
#4 Cut credit card & payment processing work
Accepting credit cards and other payments is a manual processing hassle with data entry, wrong credit card numbers, declined cards, and accounting complexities. Or you just accept checks – taking longer to collect money. An online system will eliminate these extra steps with real-time credit card processing and built-in automated accounting doing the job… the moment someone registers.
#5 Cut registrant change work
Registrant’s changes and cancellation are a necessary part of registration that create an influx of calls and email requests that interrupt you at your busiest time – right before the event! With an online system, registrants can go online and make their own updates and cancellations without ever having to bother you. You just get the email notification that it took place.
#6 Cut capacity management work
Managing capacities for popular events, breakout sessions, and room blocks can be a labor intensive task with keeping track, limiting, and wait listing. Attention Women It’s Okay to Show Interest!
September 28, 2008
I have a confession as a man I need to make to all the women: We men are clueless about anything subliminal that you do. We really are. You need to be obvious to get our attention.
For any of you who have lived with a man (whether it was a boyfriend, a husband or a brother), this will probably sound familiar. As you leave the house one day, you ask a man to clean up or straighten up a bit while you’re gone. So what does he do? He goes to the sink, puts a few things in the dishwasher . . . and that’s it. Meanwhile there are still dog hair tumbleweeds traveling across the living room floor and laundry piles up to the ceiling. When questioned about those, he inevitably says “I didn’t notice those.”
Men don’t notice small details. They have no idea about the little clues. Men need the obvious. Women need to really understand this, especially when it comes to communicating their interest in men.
Women need to realize that it is not only okay, but necessary, that they show men they are interested. So many women I’ve coached will tell me they flirt with men all the time but never get any response. When I ask them what they did that they were calling “flirting,” virtually every one will tell me they “glanced over at him a couple times” or they “smiled at him a couple times quickly” or something similar.
These two second glances and quick smiles simply do not constitute flirting in the eyes of a man. They are simply not obvious enough.
When many women go to flirt with a man, they do something they believe to be flirting but which is in reality is something too subtle for that man to notice it. So despite that woman’s interest, the man will leave that situation thinking she didn’t like him.
When I say that you need to show interest that is obvious, I am not talking about you grabbing a man and sticking your tongue down his throat as you grind up against him. What I mean by showing interest are things like smiling a bit more or touching his arm a little bit when you talk to him. I mean that you need to use your body language to express your interest. Lean in a little when you talk to him, Flirt with him. Laugh at his jokes. Engage him in some deeper conversation.
If you’re interested in a man you meet, don’t wait for him to ask you out. Say something to him like “I really enjoyed this great conversation. Hopefully we’ll run into each other again some day.” Let him know you’re interested.
Not only is it okay to show a man you’re interested, but you should show men you’re interested because you want to be in control of your dating life. If you think about it there are really only two choices: you can either start to show your interest or you can continue to do nothing (or to use subtle gestures which convey the same message as nothing to men).
Every time I address this issue, I get tons of emails from women saying some version of this: “David, I can’t do these things. If I do, men are going to think I’m coming onto them and will just think I want to sleep with them.” Let me address this misperception so we can clear it up once and for all.
If you are making out with a guy in his living room, he is going to assume that the two of you are just going to have a makeout session in the living room all night long. The only way we men know you want to sleep with us, even in that situation, is if you say “Let’s get naked and go in the bedroom.” Once again, men don’t pick up on subtlety and even on the semi-obvious.
So the fact is that if you like us, it’s okay to show some interest. We are not going to over-think or assume more about it than what it is. If you smile, lean in and touch our arm when you’re talking to us, we’re not going to think we’re going to get to hook-up with you right there and then or that you want to drag us off to bed.
All we think is that you like us, that we can ask you out . . . and this could potentially be a relationship. You need to remember this the next time your head is telling you that we’re reading all these other things into everything you do.
So ladies, take control of your dating lives by showing us when you’re interested. Not only is it okay to do that . . . but we men could not be happier when you do.
